Good morning besties :w':. So, it's a new week, a new day... And we've all got plans, visions, goals and dreams, u know. But all of these can't come into existence if we don't take action. We need to move beyond being passive and get active.

Anyways, I've had this strong feeling to create an awareness on the human health in general. Through my posts via this forum for now though...
We all know the saying that 'health is wealth'. There's no way we can be successful and wealthy in life if our health is at its lowest level. Consider the case of an individual having a headache, he/she gets uncomfortable and disoriented. And that individual won't be able to deliver or perform at his or her maximum capability.

Now it's just enough for us to be aware. Apparently most or all of us have come across some health posts/articles but treated it as not important. Lets endeavor to take necessary steps and actions where our health and body is concerned.
What we feed our body with internally determines the result we get on the outside (externally).

Last week was actually world folic acid week. And I know most of us missed out on the awareness. So, this week I'll be doing a series on the importance of Folic Acid, the various sources of folic acid, it's nutritional benefits and also the effects of folic acid defficiency, side effects when taken, and also the category of humans who needs it most.

I'm so excited about this. Reason being that I'll be sharing some vital informations which will in turn add value to individuals and their health, and I'll be learning also in the process. So... Let's get going. We'll be focusing on what folic acid is today.

What is Folic Acid?


Folic acid is a form of vitamin B9 that can dissolve in water. It is a key ingredient in the making of the nucleic acid that forms part of all genetic material.
It is a complex B vitamin , similar to vitamin B12. Vitamin B9 and its forms carry out the crucial functions of creating more red blood cells, preventing hearing loss , and preserving the brain health of infants.

Folic acid is a water soluble B vitamin and micro - nutrient essential for the growth and development of the unborn child.

Folic acid aids in DNA synthesis and repairs red bllod cell creation. It aids in the prevention of anaemia and encourages foetal development.

Deficiency of folic acid can have significant effects on the brain development of the unborn child.

Lack of folic acids has also been linked to mental depression.

According to the US Preventable Task Force women of child bearing age should consume 0.4-0.8 mg of folic acids a day.

Why is Folic Acid Important?

Folic acid is essential for women who are pregnant.
Vitamin B9 includes both folate and folic acid and is important for several functions in the body.
According to the British Dietetic Association (BDA), folic acid is vital for making red blood cells, as well as:
> the synthesis and repair of DNA and RNA
> aiding rapid cell division and growth
> enhancing brain health, although the evidenc mixed and more research is needed
> age-related hearing loss

It is particularly important for women who are pregnant to consume enough folic acid. This helps prevent the fetus from developing major congenital deformities of the brain or spine, including neural tube defects, such as spina bifida and anencephaly.

Women planning to get pregnant should take folic acid supplements for a full year before conception to reduce the risk of these developments.
Folic acid is thought to play a preventive role in a range of conditions.
