Road Users Hail Accident Victim Identification Scheme
Lagos — The social emergency and identification card recently introduced by the Accident Victim Rescue and Information Services of Nigeria (AVIRS) has attracted reactions from diverse quarters. While some lauded the initiative others pick hole on the idea saying it is no practicable.
Introduced few weeks ago, the card which will contain both personal and medical information of Nigerians is to help ease identification, statistics and medical follow up in the event of disaster, emergency/accident at home, during childbirth, school, industrial, market places, airport, waterway, rail and highways nationwide. But, Daily Champion went enquiries reveal that a lot need to be done in order to achieve wider acceptance of the card by the greater number of the populace. For instance, some of the people who spoke to our correspondent had not heard about the card since its emergence almost three weeks now, which demands that massive enlightenment campaign need to be engaged to inform the generality of the people. More so, those who had heard expressed fear over what they tagged 'Nigerian Syndrome' saying the scheme could be hijacked by the rich. Rosemary Nweke, a trader told our correspondent that in as much as the initiative is a laudable one the initiators should endeavours to bring it within the reach of every Nigerian by making it less costly. "It is good thing, but is it going to within the reach of the poor. Because we the poor masses travel more by road and as a result are more vulnerable to road traffic accidents than the rich ones" she said. Aminu Ibrahim, a motor boy with one the major truck operators at Ijora area of Lagos described the scheme as a welcome development saying road accident cases are on the increase and that there could have not been any better time to introduce such scheme...
